COMMON ROOM

Curated by Isabelle Sully with collaborative works by Jessie Bullivant, Heidi Holmes, Daniel Isabelle Sully and Isadora Vaughan.
Text by Daniel Stephen Miller.

Using meeting as a starting point Common Room will materialize through a web of collaborations. Space will be questioned in terms of its human occupation; as passed through, across and around. The show will prompt the treatment of architecture as an occasion for activity, making spaces fluid, changeable, and portable through interaction and inhabitance.

Catherine or Kate

Founded as ‘Fiona Mail’ in 2008, renamed as ‘Catherine Sagin’ in 2010, the practice of Brisbane-based collaborative duo ‘Catherine or Kate’ enacts an ongoing reassessment of the popular paradigms of collaboration. In the lead up to this exhibition theyundertook a residency at Skaftfell Art Centre in Iceland where they continued the competitive method developed in ‘Duel’, a live fencing match between the collaborators in 2010. Using a typical mix of shameless bravado and deadpan framing their new work in photography and video asks participants and viewers to evaluate the duo’s physical appearance.

Catherine or Kate hail from Brisbane. They have recently completed MA degrees at QUT and their work has been exhibited at the Institute of Modern Art, Museum of Brisbane, various Artist-run galleries and in Sydney at Artspace. In 2012 they will be undertaking a mentorship with UK artists Paul Harrison and John Wood.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Holy Alliance

An artist residency is not unlike a managerial commune, a place where one can realize their full potential.

In September 2011 Ramona Lola Angelico lived for two months in the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian Rocky mountains with a group of artists; bound together by nature and elevated high above reality, in a paradise of sublime vistas, tranquility, camaraderie and clean sheets.

Ramona works across a variety of mediums formats and processes that involve both individual and collaborative-based practices. Her work often blurs the boundaries between truth and fiction acting as a kind of social cartography examining language, modes of propaganda, group dynamics and interpersonal relationships.
Since graduating from the Victorian College of the arts in 2009 Ramona has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally and now seeks to travel the world in artistic luxury.

Gallery 1

Leo Steinberg’s essay ‘The Flatbed Picture Plane’ and his idea ‘verticality verses horizontality’ is something tangible that strings our practices together. Steinberg associates “horizontality with a paradigm shift in art from nature to culture” At first glance, Minna’s paintings represent nature (verticality) and Georgina’s represent culture (horizontality) however, by curating these works together we hope to unceremoniously seam the parallel and vertical together. The nature of being immersed and truly existing within an environment or space is that one is unforgivingly amongst what he or she is perceiving.

This work explores the connection between emotions or frustrations with material objects, in the two smaller gallery spaces.

The third in a series of exhibitions based on the merging practice of sculptors Tully Arnot and Charles Dennington, Um Om develops on the artists’ investigation into the ideological conflict between intent and outcome. Their work explores the position of ‘exhibited maquette’ in sculptural process, and the dialogue between ‘unfinished/open’ works that exists in objects situated on the boundaries of sculpture and installation. Individual works can be viewed as idiomatic elements that, in isolation, read differently to how they exist within the whole of Um Om.

Um Om is a refinement of the previous two exhibitions, (Bozo & Bozzetto and Double or Nothing) developing on both successes and failures to produce ‘better’ successes and failures. This form of collaborative practice was originally built on a cross-pollination of sorts where each artist created maquettes, which were traded and then ‘finished’ off into whole works by the other.

Ultimately this process broke down, abandoning the dichotomy of model and outcome, to exist as an open chaotic process of critique, acceptance and self-reflection. This process has allowed them the freedom as artists to loosen their authoritative grip on published works, each creating singular works but exhibiting them in each-others shadow.

Arnot and Dennington are both emerging artists based in Sydney, working in a cross-disciplinary practice, particularly interested in the heuristic philosophy of experimental sculpture. Charles is currently undertaking an MFA at Sydney College of Arts under the supervision of Mikala Dwyer, researching the role of absurdism and the individual in simulated aestheticised reality. Tully is undertaking an MFA at the College of Fine Arts under the supervision of Richard Goodwin and Allan Giddy, researching non-teleological invention and the unfinished object, in relation to the alchemical change of object to artwork.
