Catherine or Kate

Founded as ‘Fiona Mail’ in 2008, renamed as ‘Catherine Sagin’ in 2010, the practice of Brisbane-based collaborative duo ‘Catherine or Kate’ enacts an ongoing reassessment of the popular paradigms of collaboration. In the lead up to this exhibition theyundertook a residency at Skaftfell Art Centre in Iceland where they continued the competitive method developed in ‘Duel’, a live fencing match between the collaborators in 2010. Using a typical mix of shameless bravado and deadpan framing their new work in photography and video asks participants and viewers to evaluate the duo’s physical appearance.

Catherine or Kate hail from Brisbane. They have recently completed MA degrees at QUT and their work has been exhibited at the Institute of Modern Art, Museum of Brisbane, various Artist-run galleries and in Sydney at Artspace. In 2012 they will be undertaking a mentorship with UK artists Paul Harrison and John Wood.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Holy Alliance

An artist residency is not unlike a managerial commune, a place where one can realize their full potential.

In September 2011 Ramona Lola Angelico lived for two months in the breathtaking beauty of the Canadian Rocky mountains with a group of artists; bound together by nature and elevated high above reality, in a paradise of sublime vistas, tranquility, camaraderie and clean sheets.

Ramona works across a variety of mediums formats and processes that involve both individual and collaborative-based practices. Her work often blurs the boundaries between truth and fiction acting as a kind of social cartography examining language, modes of propaganda, group dynamics and interpersonal relationships.
Since graduating from the Victorian College of the arts in 2009 Ramona has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally and now seeks to travel the world in artistic luxury.
